That's why I have the overheat higher than the cutoff, so that it cuts off before it decides to set the fan to 100%. I would much rather just having mining pause. If the temp reaches the overheat, then it sets the fan to 100% until it cools down. You need to watch it and pick a moderate, relatively narrow band of engine speeds to maintain a good average hash rate.įrom what I understood, if the temp reaches the cutoff, then mining pauses until the temp drops. The same is for the high range, if set too high your card will throttle the engine too much and you will spike your temps quickly. Step the low end engine core speed up until your card sits somewhere around your target without going over your temp target. If you set the lower end of your range too low, your card will throttle hard and you will see a low hash rate as it drops to the lowest setting when the card gets too hot. This involves some testing, and you will want to monitor the card as you change settings and go through the paces. This is for my XFX 7950 with failing thermal paste, use an appropriate range for your 290. You will need to set a range for your GPU engine instead of a set number. By throttling the engine this way your fans shouldn't have to work as hard. You will lose some hash rate when the temperatures are high but it will maintain a high hash rate when the temperatures are lower, automatically. Have you tried the using auto-gpu settings? It automatically throttles your GPU's engine clock to keep temperatures near your target. Your cutoff should be higher than your overheat btw.
